After Percy Shelley's death, Mary Shelley published his works. She said about Alastor that none of his poems was "more characteristic than this:"
- worship of the majesty of nature
- broodings of a poet's heart in solitude
- exulting joy inspired by the visible universe
- sad and struggling humanity
- peaceful acceptance of death
- outpouring of emotions
All of these, of course, reflect the basic elements of Romanticism.
As mentioned in a previous post, Shelley had been erroneously diagnosed with terminal tuberculosis, and he sought to understand the meaning of his life by looking inward.
