Open Culture features a video of the Dalai Lama lecturing on Buddhism. He is so human--explains that he was 6 or 7 when he first starting learning Buddhism by rote, and didn't care for it at all, his understanding felt "like a virgin." He says when his tutors would approach it was like the sun turning dark, considered himself a stupid student. In time, of course, the rote teachings of his childhood caught on, and now he is the tutor for us all.
